African Student Association hosts Africa Week, embracing the freedom, empowerment, and future of Africa

As part of ASA’s annual Africa Week, they hosted “Taste of Africa,” an event where students discovered the vibrant flavors of Africa. This event marked the end of Africa Week, a period dedicated to celebrating the diversity of African culture. The theme for this year’s Africa Week was Inkululeko, meaning freedom, empowerment, and the future of Africa.

Fashion, the future in Tisch Commons: ASA hosts Annual Fashion Show

A daring and colorful display of Blackness and African culture, the African Students Association’s 2020 Fashion Show and cultural exposition reminded audience members to look to the past in order to grab on to the future, Friday, Feb. 28. Hosted by sophomores Nana Kusi and Yohanes Mulat, the African Students Association (ASA) brought us into the future with this year’s theme, “Sankofa: Into the Afroverse.”

Africa week comes to campus

The African Students Association wants to show the Washington University campus that there is a lot more to Africa than the stereotypes and myths that many students believe. This year’s Africa Week, taking place this week, is titled “Myths and Legends.” The main event will be at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Edison Theatre, where the West African dance company Afriky Lolo will present “Sundiata: The King of Mali.
