“In The Heights” is not the first movie of its kind in recent years, and it does not look like it will be the last. The past decade has seen a resurgence of movie-musicals.

Don’t want to be an American idiot? You might be if you miss out on this weekend’s performances of the Green Day musical at the Peabody Opera House. “American Idiot” opened on Broadway in April 2010 and stayed running for almost a year. It has been touring the country since the beginning of 2012, and its time in St. Louis is here.
The new musical in town wants to be clear that it’s nothing like “Glee.” Other than the fact that it’s a musical, this is a statement I can agree with. Tonight, at 9 p.m. CST, NBC will premiere “Smash,” its new follow-up to “The Voice.” The show has a grown-up premise, unlike its “Glee”-ful competitor.
