Amid attacks on student visas and increased ICE arrests in Missouri, junior Jaqueline Marquez Salgado founded Response in Action: Students for Immigrant Justice (RAISE), a new student-led organization at WashU “dedicated to uplifting immigrant voices,” according to its Instagram bio. Marquez Salgado, the acting president of RAISE, said she was motivated to start an immigration justice club this semester after reading headlines about ICE arrests over the summer. 

After weather-related cancellations on both Friday and Saturday this weekend, on its final day, the 90th annual ThurtenE carnival was open all day on Sunday April 6. That afternoon, two juveniles—one of whom was armed—were arrested near the carnival’s entrance; however, the event continued until its scheduled close at 8 p.m.

Protesters have spoken out against Washington University’s administration after the WashU Police Department (WUPD) carried out more than 100 arrests at a pro-Palestine encampment, with some calling the response unnecessarily violent, April 27.

Commit to showing solidarity with everyone who has been involved with this and everyone who is affected by this.

This situation would never have occurred had the University previously taken more initiative to work with Fight for $15 members to create a clear plan to address the organization’s demands.

Eight individuals occupying Chancellor-elect Martin’s office for a Fight for $15 protest were arrested by the Washington University Police Department (WUPD) earlier this evening.

Washington University’s recent released 2014 Clery Report showed a decrease in arrests and referrals on campus.
