Kacey Musgraves brings the back of beyond to center stage

The first line of the press release for Kacey Musgraves’ “Middle of Nowhere” tour reads, “KACEY MUSGRAVES HAS BALLS.” The balls, of course, are “giant, anatomically-correct, mirrored disco balls” (emphasis original) that sit center stage during the eight-time Grammy winner’s tour for her sixth studio album.

The stage decor is a marked change from Musgraves’ 2013 debut, “Same Trailer Different Park.” She stood out immediately from the country milieu with her cheerful, almost twee sound, combined with sharp, clever lyricism. In the decade and a half since, Musgraves’ music has transformed from the hauntingly beautiful, wildly acclaimed “Golden Hour” to the pensive, spiritual reflection of “Deeper Well.”

Released in May, “Middle of Nowhere” marks a return to Musgraves’ signature dry wit and country roots. The lead single, “Dry Spell,” is a deadpan lament to being, in Musgraves’ words, “lonely with a capital H.” The penultimate track, “Mexico Honey,” a Tejano-influenced upbeat, poppy song about a new beau, indicates the aforementioned dry spell may be coming to a close. The entire album is infused with the quiet loneliness of an empty blue sky or, more precisely, being stuck in the titular middle of nowhere, and still taking on the journey ahead with grace and love — perhaps the ballsiest thing one can do.

Kacey Musgraves will perform at the Enterprise Center on Saturday, Sept. 12.
