From cheddar to chocolate: Seven Papa Bear Popcorn flavors to try

| Senior Editor

Papa Bear Popcorn has made a recent appearance in Millbrook Market in the Village, coming from the company’s main location in Chesterfield, Mo. This week, I took a trip to Millbrook Market and tried seven of the many flavors the company has to offer. Here’s what I found:

Snake eyes
As a bit of a disclaimer, I had no idea what Snake Eyes was before purchasing this item. I took a little trip to Papa Bear’s website and found that this popcorn is the company’s “spiciest (hottest) popcorn flavor,” composed of flavors of sriracha, jalapeno and garlic. I would like to make it known that I have never been one for spice, but nonetheless, I accepted the challenge. Maybe it’s my ill-adapted taste buds or the actual truth of the flavor, but this popcorn packs a pretty decent punch. I couldn’t fully pinpoint the sriracha flavor, but the spice of the jalapeno and the savoriness of the garlic made this popcorn enjoyable (despite the burning that remained in my mouth for 10 minutes after eating).

Strawberry chocolate
I wasn’t entirely sure what this one was going to taste like based on its name–is it supposed to be strawberry flavored chocolate or chocolate covered strawberries? Is there even a difference? Either way, regardless of the name, I was enticed by the rich, bubblegum pink coating on the kernels. In terms of taste, I wasn’t getting too many hints of chocolate here, but the strawberry came through loud and clear, as was suggested through the pink coloration. The popcorn was very sweet but gently flavored, kind of like a strawberry milkshake. I would definitely recommend this one as a dessert option.

White cheddar
This popcorn flavor really is exactly what it claims to be. Upon first glance, it almost resembles a regular, unbuttered popcorn–save for a few green specks that are presumably a seasoning of some sort–thus varying dramatically in appearance from its sibling, Extra Extra Cheesy. But the taste of this popcorn is exceptionally cheesy, despite its white exterior. This snack errs a little on the saltier side of the popcorn spectrum, so if cheesy, salty, mess-free food sounds like your go-to snack, this popcorn is for you.

Oreo
This flavor is equally dense when compared to its Strawberry Chocolate counterpart. It presents itself as less of popcorn and more as disfigured globs of black-speckled white; these kernels are thoroughly coated in white chocolate. An extra bonus? There are actually large chunks of Oreo cookies that come with this popcorn, which guarantees an authentic Oreo flavor.

Dill pickle
This popcorn was very similar in appearance to the White Cheddar flavor, except this one was slightly more yellowed with a few more green specks. The Dill Pickle popcorn flavor is very true to name, differing only in the sense that it is indeed popcorn and not an actual pickle. The flavor is strong so, much like pickles, I would eat this one sparingly. That being said, pickle-flavored foods have become sort of a meme in recent years, but if you’re actually a fan of pickles, rest assured you can eat this one unironically; it won’t disappoint.

Cinnamon toast
The cinnamon toast-flavored popcorn is well coated in cinnamon, showing a mostly brown popcorn with a faint bit of yellow shining through. This popcorn does taste similar to that of cinnamon toast, however, it lacks a little bit of sweetness and carries more of the cinnamon flavor, which also makes the popcorn have a grainy texture. The lack of sweetness makes this popcorn a good sweet and salty snack, but I wouldn’t reach for it if you’re looking for a huge sugar kick.

Birthday cake
This flavor is by far the most enticing of the bunch, if not by name then by appearance. These kernels are thicker than that of regular popcorn, as they are coated in some sort of white chocolate-esque glaze paired with bright confetti sprinkles. Due to the coating on this popcorn, it had a very slight, thicker texture in comparison to the others. As far as flavor is concerned, this popcorn was exceptionally sweet, and I was honestly surprised at how similar the flavor was to birthday cake. This popcorn is certainly a good pick as a dessert or as a celebratory snack.

Overall
These popcorn flavors did not disappoint. Their presentation was done well, with a signature label of the company’s logo. Each flavor came in abundance, having been placed in a sixteen-ounce cup, also filling up the dome lid with popcorn. Papa Bear Popcorn offers a great amount of snack, dessert and generally fun popcorn flavors to make your snacking experience really pop.
