VP Debate Fashion - Student Life

VP Debate Fashion

It’s time for the vice presidential debates. You open your closet, and can’t find anything to wear! After all of your sweat and tears, you managed to be one of the few Wash. U. students to land a ticket, and you can’t even decide on what to wear! Well, here’s a debate fashion solution for both men and women.

Ladies, you don’t want to get caught wearing the same Ralph Lauren white button down and black Banana Republic pencil skirt as the next girl. Here are some runway-inspired options to consider.

Option 1: Menswear.

Just like every fall, menswear is huge again. However, to avoid looking to masculine, wear a ruffled tuxedo top in a color that flatters your skin tone. Instead of white, opt for a soft pink or cream to show that you still mean business. Pair it with form-fitting pants—preferably ones that hit the floor when you slip on some fashionable heeled oxfords— and you’ll be the most fashionable lucky woman in the room. To complete your look, add some bold earrings and a nice leather bag, and your all set!

Option 2: Prep Cool.

Sounds weird, right? Well, it’s actually pretty simple. The main components to achieving this look are 1. A nice high-colored top—whether it be a soft cashmere turtleneck or a printed button down—a blazer or v-neck sweater, roomy dress pants and abold 40’s inspired neckpiece or a silk scarf. This look will keep you casual and completely professional. For the daring and bold there is option 3, which comes with no cool title. Basically, instead of wearing simple dress pants and a top, opt for interesting proportions, but try to keep the colors simple. Confused? Don’t be. Try a skinnier pant with a heavier top such as a chunky knit sweater or voluminous layers. Or try a dress that ends above the knees with an oversized cardigan, tights and heeled oxfords for an entirely new shape. If you choose any of these options, make sure you are comfortable and cute!

Guys, unfortunately you don’t get as many options as the ladies. However, you still want to look sharp.

Option 1: Consider wearing a sweater vest over your button down and tie instead of wearing another suit jacket.

To keep things interesting, try choosing a fun print or color, such as argyle or red. Don’t forget to polish your dress shoes. This wouldn’t be the right time to bust out your new sneakers.

Option 2: Preppy.

Basically, wear khakis with an ironed polo, preferably one that compliments your skin tone or brings out the color in your eyes, and some boat shoes. You know, Sperrys. This look doesn’t require much thought, so if you’re crunched for time, this is the look for you.

Hopefully this guide will make your outfitting easier. Use clothes that your already have, but find subtle ways to make your look interesting. If all else fails, ask your roommate if you look Debate-worthy.
