Mothers Bar: One year later, Washington University reflects

A year ago, the world was watching six black Washington University students.
It began when the Original Mothers Bar rejected the students, who were on the senior class trip, on the basis that their jeans were too baggy. After one of the students switched jeans with a white student, who was then admitted to the bar, the black students said they had been discriminated against because of their race.

National coalition on socioeconomic diversity finally becomes a reality

A national initiative spearheaded by Washington University and focused on increasing undergraduate socioeconomic diversity was formally founded on Wednesday. Last Wednesday, Saint Louis University (SLU) passed legislation forming its own chapter, SLU/FUSED. In doing so, SLU joins co-founders Washington University and Duke University.

Senate passes resolution in support of U/FUSED

Student Union Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution in support of founding United for Undergraduate Socio-Economic Diversity (U/FUSED), a group that would aim to increase socioeconomic diversity on a national level at undergraduate schools. U/FUSED will be a coalition that has organizations at different undergraduate schools.

Seniors commit class gift to McLeod scholarship fund

Senior Class President Fernando Cutz announced Wednesday night that the Class of 2010 would donate all funds raised through the senior class gift drive to the McLeod Scholars Program. The scholarship commemorates dean Jim McLeod, who has taken a leave of absence to undergo cancer treatment.

Mothers settlement should be a model for rectifying racism

In America today, it is easy to forget that there are some things that lawsuits cannot settle, things that legislation cannot change.
It makes sense to sue those who embezzle money for financial damages; similarly, it makes sense to put dangerous criminals behind bars. The former ensures that wealth is redistributed appropriately; the latter makes certain that the accused do not commit similar acts of violence again. In these cases, the punishment is appropriate and contributes to a just, secure society.

Students announce agreement with Mothers Bar

Senior class president Fernando Cutz and the six black students who allege they were racially discriminated against by the Original Mothers bar in Chicago said at a news conference Wednesday that they will not be pressing charges against the establishment.
