Op-Ed: SU’s ‘impeachment proceedings’ are an embarrassing stain on student government
Over the last couple weeks, I have been horrified. Not by the minor errors in Student Union election proceedings, but in the singling out of a student’s small mistake. Though it is disappointing that SU failed to recalculate or rerun a flawed election, it is even more disappointing that a University-sponsored organization would publicly harass a student through embarrassing “impeachment proceedings.” I would like to disclaim that I have no personal connection to anyone involved in this situation; I am simply appalled by what appears to me to be High School Musical-style bullying. Rather than seek a different position for the person involved or call a meeting to discuss options, a senator initiated unnecessary and embarrassing “impeachment proceedings” against the student commissioner. During these proceedings, the senator called the commissioner “clearly incompetent,” something that anyone can agree is completely unreasonable for a representative of the student body.
Those that voted to remove their peer are: Dylan Cassilly, Adya Dhuler, Chloe Doumar, Nkemjika Emenike, Zach Fisher, Anne He, Kevin He, Ruchika Kamojjala, Philip Keisler, Matthew Kim, Kristina Lee, Nicole Leers, Amaan Mahadevan, Eric Miller, Sophie Scott, Mason Simmons, Gaby Smith, Olivia Vella, Raghed Abdel-Tawab, Fadel Alkilani, Otto Brown, Zoe Hancock, Arjan Kalra, Andrew Kocins, Max Roitblat, Stephanie Sarkar, Jake Sassmanhausen, Hannah Shapiro, Zach Sorensen. I am very disappointed in your failure to uphold SU’s mission “to advocate for all student voices.”
