X Ambassadors sing in the holiday season at the Pageant
On a Tuesday eve just days before break, the campus was quiet with everyone tucked away in dorm rooms and library cubicles preparing for fast-approaching final exams.
A few doors down on the Delmar Loop, however, the night was far from quiet. Alternative bands Saint Motel and X Ambassadors made their way to the the Pageant for KPNT 105.7 The Point “HoHo Show,” filling the cozy venue with a powerful sound extending beyond the doors and onto a subdued Delmar Loop.
While the less-than-crowded event could be a testament to the busyness of this time of year for people of every working age, a momentary break from the stress was certainly a break well spent. If you missed it, may this moment-by-moment retelling fill your mind with the sounds and sights of the night, briefly obscuring the lines between reality and fantasy so that you may temporarily sit among the crowd.
Promptly at 8 p.m., the concert began, as Saint Motel took the stage and led the audience through a brief showing of its most familiar hits. “Puzzle Pieces,” off of the band’s 2012 debut album, “Voyeur,” and “Cold Cold Man,” off its most recent EP, “My Type,” were among the songs that made their way onto the band’s set list. The opener kept the music loud and the energy high in preparation for X Ambassadors.
Short but sweet, the band closed with its most popular release, “My Type,” off the EP of the name. In addition to the both lyrically and rhythmically uplifting indie-pop music the band played, its members obviously gave their all to making this smaller performance as mood-setting and optimistic as any first act could be. Each band member—most notably the band’s lead vocalist and pianist, A.J. Jackson—was more than willing to dance like no one’s watching at center stage, which conveyed the group’s appreciation for the good times of which it sung.
After a brief period of preparation, X Ambassadors took the stage to hype up the Tuesday night with their first song, “Loveless,” off of their debut LP, “VHS.” The set list was like an emotional rollercoaster, with the first few songs offering lyrics attesting to the lows of lost love and dwindling determination to “Hang On.” But just listening to the group’s sound would never lead one to expect to hear such starkly realistic lyricism. Instead, the band’s instrumentation displayed its rock roots, leaving people’s attempts for conversation lost in the sound waves, and their hearts thumping to the beat of the drums.
Part of the build-up to the roller coaster’s ever-rising high was one of the band’s most popular songs, “Unsteady.” As an introduction, an impressive piano solo by the band’s blind keyboardist, Casey Harris, amid a dark and smoky stage helped the audience members shift their minds and ears to the night’s developing acoustic vibe. By the song’s end, the performance had largely broken into an audience sing-along conducted by lead vocalist Sam Harris, although the band itself did not sound “unsteady” in the least. Following this throwback to its 2014 EP “The Reason,” the band performed a collection of songs off of “VHS,” including “Naked,” “Nervous” and “Gorgeous.” An incorporation of a harmonized saxophone duet during “Naked” threw a jazzy vibe into the eclectic mix of sounds and genres that X Ambassadors embrace.
As the concert neared its end, the band broke out the traditional acoustic guitar for its performance of audience favorite “Renegades.” The climax did not end here, however. As the final song of the main set, “Jungle” brought back the hype and picked the crowd up for the final encore. “Low Life” closed the show on a calmer note, leaving members of the audience cathartically satisfied and prepared to return to the world of an average Tuesday night.
