Cast ‘N Crew brings Elvis classics to the stage in ‘All Shook Up’
Student theater organization will Cast N’ Crew present “All Shook Up” this weekend in the Village Black Box Theatre, from Friday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 10. “All Shook Up,” which debuted in 2004, is a classic jukebox musical, constructed entirely from classic Elvis Presley tunes. The plot takes tips from several of William Shakespeare’s most famous works, especially “Twelfth Night.”
The show centers around a leather-jacketed, slick-haired, motorcycle-riding mystery man named Chad who makes a huge splash when he arrives in a sleepy 1950s town. His rock-n-roll loving spirit inspires the city and even stirs up some romance along the way.
When Chad arrives in the small middle-America town, he meets Natalie, a young hopeless romantic who immediately catches feelings for the smooth-talking greaser. Chad cranks up a broken-down jukebox at Sylvia’s local honky-tonk, and an infectious musical celebration spreads throughout the town. All of a sudden, the town’s residents become lovestruck, and the romantic hijinks of the show begin. A love-octagon is formed: Dennis, Chad’s newly crowned sidekick, loves Natalie, who loves Chad, who has eyes for Miss Sandra, the beautiful museum curator. Jim, Natalie’s widowed father, is also smitten with Sandra, but Sylvia soon finds out she has hidden feelings for Jim. Mayor Matilda and Sheriff Earl have eyes for each other, and so do Dean (the Sheriff’s son) and Lorraine (Sylvia’s daughter). Wow, that was a lot.
Cast N’ Crew president Lia White says the show is chock-full of “great dance numbers, heartfelt solos and fun one-liners.” The 16-member cast and 25-member production crew has “been in rehearsals for about 8 weeks and working really hard to put all of the pieces together.”
If there’s one thing we can certainly expect from this production, it’s exciting and nostalgic musical numbers. The soundtrack is made up of Presley’s best and most beloved, including “Love Me Tender,” “Hound Dog,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and, of course, “All Shook Up.” Pairing such wonderful original material with live performances by the show’s talented cast is definitely a winning formula.
Cast N’ Crew’s production of “All Shook Up” is sure to be a dynamic, fun-loving show with plenty of rockabilly flare. As of today, every performance has completely sold out, so the Village Black Box is sure to be bursting with laughter and song all weekend!
