Along with performing, Rydyr emceed the event. At the start of the night, he asked the crowd to cheer if they had been to a drag show before, which was met with scattered applause.

Then, he asked who was new to the world of drag and the audience erupted in cheers.

“It’s [Washington University],” Rydyr said. “I’m not surprised.”

Pride Alliance was enthusiastic about bringing Drag Show to the Washington University community.

“Drag culture is such an integral part of queer culture and so we want to bring drag as an art form both into the Wash. U. community by making a space where student performers can show off their skills but also bringing local performers in so that they can show off their skills,” sophomore Gina Gopon, organizer of Drag Show, said.

From Beyonce to Ginuwine, the performers of the night used musical inspiration to show off their talents. Music fueled the theatrical performances which were over-the-top, artistic and everything in between.

“I’m very irreverent…in my first number I mixed ‘Vroom Vroom’ by Charli XCX with Instructor Mooselini’s rap from the video game ‘Parappa the Rapper,’” performer Iman Prep said. “I use the dildos as steering wheels, because why the hell not? I like to get the audience involved too, like in that number when Instructor Mooselini is teaching Karapa how to drive, I’m Mooselini and I get someone else to be Parappa and I have them do my choreography.”

Project Ark, an organization that supports for those afflicted by or at risk of contracting HIV, tabled at Drag Show. Throughout the event, safe sex practices were encouraged.

“Play however you want to play, but always play safely,” Rydyr said.
