Listen, watch, enjoy: The weekend in arts
It’s spring again, which means showers are falling, flowers are blooming and creative people on campus are hurriedly running around like stress-consumed hamsters. The rest of us students, however, reap the benefits of their labor by getting the opportunity to witness some of the finest arts presentations, performances and screenings of the year. With so many options, Cadenza staff decided to put together a small preview of what’s going on in the Washington University performing arts world this weekend:
Carnaval 2016: Origenes
The 17th annual Association of Latin American Students-hosted Carnaval will feature 12 dances, a performance and a skit focusing on issues of identity and sexuality. Put together by 160-plus students, the program seeks to share the traditions of Latin America and Spain with the greater Wash. U. community. The shows are April 8 at 7 p.m. and April 9 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Edison Theater.
Love and Information
A play including over 50 scenes and 100 different characters, “Love and Information” will be put on by the performing arts department. Originally written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Andrea Urice, the play consists of numerous amusing vignettes attempting to show our human relationships in the digital age. Showtimes are 8 p.m. April 8 and 9 and April 10 at 2 p.m., and all performances will be held in the A.E. Hotchner Studio Theatre.
Mosaic Whispers’ 25th annual concert
Coming recently off their ICCA win, the Mosaic Whispers will have their 25th annual concert: Splash of Color. Performances will be on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Auditorium, in which The Pikers and The Greenleafs will also perform and on April 9 at 9:30 p.m. in Graham Chapel.
Screening of “TRAPPED”
A film screening of “TRAPPED,” made in 2016, brings forward a discussion about reproductive rights and abortion by following clinic workers and lawyers through their day to day lives. The event on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Brown 100, presented by both student reproductive rights groups and local affiliates, will include a Q&A and discussion.
SPB Presents: CHERUB at THE PAGEANT
The Social Programming Board will be bringing indie-electronic duo CHERUB to the Pageant on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. for music and frozen yogurt. The Nashville, Tenn. pair are known for their hit “Doses & Mimosas” and have played the festival circuit, including stops at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. DJ Alter will be opening the jam-packed night.
AST presents: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
All Student Theatre’s performance of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” a play based on characters and events from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” will be on April 14, 15, 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. in Brookings Quadrangle. For anyone who absolutely loved their high school English class, this play will appeal to your sensibilities, with cameos from “Hamlet” characters and meanderings of the two lovable messengers so unfortunately killed in the original work.
Aristocats present: Disney University
Want to sing along to some of your favorite childhood songs? Feel the need to relive the best days of your life? Well, you’re in luck! The a cappella group The Aristocats will have a performance titled “Disney University in St. Louis” on April 15 at 7 p.m. in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium.
Cast n’ Crew presents: Boeing Boeing
Written by Marc Camoletti and directed by senior Victoria Yin, this French play tells of bachelor Bernard and how his three-timing ways are thrown into question when all three of his stewardess girlfriends are in town simultaneously. A classic farce, “Boeing Boeing” uses the new speedier planes of the day to put a liar to the test. Cast n’ Crew will perform April 8 and April 9 at 8 p.m. and April 9 and April 10 at 2 p.m. in the Village Black Box.
