Bauhaus may not have been funded this year by Student Union’s treasury, but the Architecture School Council brought Sam Fox Fest to campus this year to continue its efforts to raise money for its charity, the Alberti Program.
Just like that, without any prior conversations involving ASC, Bauhaus was no more. The funding cut was a strong-armed move by SU and a clear abuse of its power over smaller student organizations, but ASC has been forced to adapt with the sudden change. Instead of Bauhaus this year, expect an all-new and entirely revamped weeklong Sam Fox Fest.
After losing funding for Bauhaus last year, the Architecture School Council hopes to replace the annual Halloween costume party with a week of smaller-scale events.
On March 4, Student Union put a damper on the impending spring breaks of architecture students. In a stunning move, Treasury and Senate passed a general budget that eliminated direct funding for Bauhaus. The general budget increased funding for class councils and Social Programming Board, both of which are very visible spenders of the student activities fee.
In a vote with no opposition Tuesday night, Student Union Treasury and Senate passed a general budget that saw an increase in W.I.L.D. talent funding but eliminated Bauhaus’ direct funding. The budget was passed 18-0-0 in Treasury and 18-0-1 in Senate. The budget of $2,685,109.
It takes a village to raise a child. Few students at Washington University are children, but we depend on resources like the Writing Center and Student Financial Services. Unfortunately, children of the poorer St. Louis school districts lack access to an adequate education.
Architecture School Council (ASC) and the GEC (Green Events Commission) would like to jointly shed a bit more light on aspects of our collaboration that were overlooked in Monday’s article. We look forward to addressing those factors in next year’s recommendation and anticipate successful composting at next year’s Bauhaus as well as other upcoming student events.
