Softball wins two of three games over weekend

The Washington University softball team won two of three games this weekend with a 4-0 win over Harris-Stowe State University on Saturday and a 5-4 win and 7-6 heartbreaking loss to Fontbonne University on Sunday.

Senior Olivia Cook took the mound again in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader and picked up her seventh win of the season with three strikeouts in a complete game.

The Red and Green bats came to life in the first inning as three runs were scored. Sophomore Maggie Mullen singled with the bases loaded to bring in two runs, and junior Sondra Polonsky scored on an error by the second baseman.

Fontbonne took back one run in each of the third and fourth innings to close the lead to 3-2, but the Bears scored the decisive runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away as sophomore Kelsey Neal doubled to right and Mullen took advantage of some lazy fielding to score.

With a 5-2 deficit heading into the top of the seventh, Fontbonne mounted a rally. After two straight, one-out singles closed the lead to one, Cook got each of the final two batters to pop out to freshman second baseman Sydney Caldwell to end the game.

Neal took the mound for the second game of the doubleheader, but two second-inning errors put the Bears in a 5-0 hole. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Polonsky and a throwing error by senior Corissa Santos plated three of five runs.

“I just think [the errors] were circumstance,” head coach Leticia Pineda-Boutté said. “We are going to face some high pressure situations from here on, and there are definitely some adjustments we are going to make in practice this week.”

Wash. U. powered its way back into the game with three home runs, the most in a game this season. Mullen smacked a solo shot to left-center in the second, Cook hit her first collegiate homer (a two-run shot to left) in the third, and senior Alyssa Abramoski lined one over the right field fence to lead off the sixth.

“[The home run] felt awesome,” Cook said. “I always practice my hitting in practice and I don’t really get to hit in games, so I’m always ready but don’t always get the chance, but it was fun today.”

Abramoski’s homer jump-started a three-run rally that tied the game at six heading into the decisive seventh inning. Polonsky singled to right field with the bases loaded as the Bears roared back from a five-run deficit.

“I’m really excited about our power, the long ball is always nice, especially from unexpected people like [Cook], who hadn’t seen an at bat for quite some time,” Pineda-Boutté said. “So it was a key moment, and it is always nice to have the long ball.”

However, Fontbonne’s Sarah Cerutti tallied her third hit of the game with a laser home run over the left field fence after Cook seemingly struck her out four pitches earlier. The Bears went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall 7-6.

“I liked the fight in our team, especially with the second game. We matched them hit for hit, but those errors in that second inning was the difference in the game,” Pineda-Boutté said.

On Saturday, Cook took a no-hitter five and two-thirds innings for the second game in a row and struck out eight, tying her career-high, in a 4-0 win over Harris-Stowe. Cook gave up just two hits for the second straight game.

“I feel great right now,” Cook said. “My arm feels really good. Coach is calling some more pitches in the past week, and I’m working my in side drop, so that is working well for me.”

Junior Ashley Janssen went two for three on the day with one RBI, a run scored and a stolen base to lead the Bears at the plate. Wash. U. scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking advantage of two errors to keep the inning alive.

The second game of the double-header was cancelled because Harris-Stowe did not have enough players to compete.

The Bears travel to Iowa next Thursday through Saturday, for a total of six games, including a doubleheader against No. 7 Central College. First pitch with Central is at 3 p.m. Thursday.

“We have definitely been tested so far this year, so it is going to be like this from here on out,” Pineda-Boutté said. “We are ready for the challenge, and we are looking forward to Iowa.”
