Over the weekend, Washington University’s sports teams were busy pitting themselves against some of Division III’s best. Men’s soccer pulled off an upset over No. 14 Ohio Northern University, No. 10 golf placed third at the Montgomery Women’s Intercollegiate tournament, and No. 1 women’s soccer remains undefeated after their first tie of the year. In addition, football was overwhelmed by the top-ranked team in Division III, and volleyball began conference play in New York. Here’s everything you need to know about WashU sports from the week of Sept. 23-29.

Football

Football lost to No. 1 North Central College 9-49 on Sept. 28. Despite an early North Central touchdown, WashU was able to get a safety early in the first quarter to keep the game within five points. A late fourth-quarter touchdown from junior quarterback Luke Johnston to senior receiver Zachary Ginsburg put the Bears’ scoreline up to nine, where it would sit for the rest of the game. WashU has a 1-10 all-time record against North Central; their singular win over the Cardinals came in 2007. The Bears now move to 2-1 on the season and play next at Illinois Wesleyan University, who WashU has beaten in their last four matchups, on Oct. 5.

No. 8 Volleyball

Volleyball entered the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on a 12-game win streak, including wins over three nationally ranked opponents. In their first two UAA games, the Bears lost to No. 7 Emory University 1-3 and No. 21 Case Western Reserve University 2-3 on Sept. 28. On Sept. 29, the Bears returned to their winning ways, defeating the University of Rochester 3-0, with graduate student Lily Steinbach leading WashU with 10 kills. WashU will return to the court against Illinois College and Westminster College (MO) on Oct. 2 and 9 before the next UAA Round Robin on Oct. 13.

Men’s Soccer

Men’s soccer faced a test against No. 14 Ohio Northern University on Saturday, Sept. 28. WashU passed with flying colors, defeating Ohio Northern 2-0 with two late goals from sophomore Quentin Gomez and junior Zach Susee in the 72nd and 75th minutes. With the pre-conference season behind them, the Bears will begin UAA play in Atlanta against Emory University on Oct. 5.

No. 1 Women’s Soccer

After tying No. 17 Calvin University 0-0 on Sept. 23, the No. 1 women’s soccer team defeated Webster University 3-0 on Sept. 25. The win marks the seventh-consecutive clean sheet for the Bears for their ninth win of the season. Junior Grace Ehlert led WashU with two goals, and first-year Olivia Clemons rounded out scoring for the squad. WashU will play one more non-conference game against Greenville University on Oct. 1 before hitting the road to play their first conference game against No. 14 Emory University on Oct. 5.

No. 10 Golf

The No. 10 women’s golf team placed third in the Montgomery Women’s Intercollegiate tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on Sept. 22 and 23. Senior and three-time All-UAA golfer Sydney Kuo placed third in Montgomery, and junior Tiffany Chan placed ninth. Sophomore Amy Beanblossom placed 14th, first-year Nicole McGuire finished 28th, and sophomore Reagan Robinson placed 30th to round out the Bears’ top five. WashU will continue their season in Farmington, Pennsylvania at the Tartan Invitational on Oct. 6-8.

No. 7 Women’s Tennis

Six members of the WashU women’s tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regionals over the weekend. In the singles bracket, first-year Ally Lin made it the furthest for WashU, losing in the quarterfinals. First-year Caitlin Bui and sophomore Eleanor Archer made a run to the doubles final match, but lost in a tiebreaker to a team from the defending national champion University of Chicago.
