B-School and Bee School team up for new business at Gregg storefronts
Students on the South 40 are abuzz about the new business coming to the Gregg storefronts.
Anelle Crevice | Student Life Washington University’s newest student-run business, Buzz Feed, is a joint effort by WU’s beekeeping club and the Olin Business School’s top students in a b(ee)-themed collaboration.
The service will deliver the highest-quality bees available this side of the Mississippi River right to the doors of students on the Danforth campus.
The business’ founders, Rita Read, a sophomore and amateur beekeeper, and David Davis, a junior studying win-win situations, came up with the idea for the service after a huge hornet got trapped in Davis’s car.
“It was so fun. We were screaming, and David [Davis] got stung in the eye. He’s blind now, but his seeing-eye dog is so cute. We wanted our peers to experience the same breed of delight,” Read said.
The service’s premium package includes a flustered queen and six males in heat swarming around a columnar mass of honey and turpentine. For an additional fee, Buzz Feed will sprinkle larvae over the entirety of your bed—a touch of down-home hospitality that many students find is missing from dorm life.
“I think this new business will help students feel more at home,” freshman Christina Banks said. “When I come home to find a burlap sack of malicious bees sitting on my doorstep, I feel less stressed about all of my newfound responsibilities.”
Buzz Feed’s premium package is “just like your mom used to make,” Banks added.
Regarding the company name, Read explained that she was looking for something that was “fresh and fun, as well as original.” Rejected names for the company include “The B-Sacks” and “Buzz About Me, I’m Dying of Bees.”
On possible comparisons to the popular website BuzzFeed, Read stated, “I have no idea what that is. I only know about bees and bee accessories.”
Davis agreed.
“I’m only listening if you’re talking shop, like stocks, facts and figures,” Davis said.
