Students start ‘Connie’s Cousin,’ featuring recipes from Paula Deen

Anger toward Connie’s Choice- sized portions taking over dining halls around campus has led a secret group of students to create a rival, more calorie-tolerant option: Connie’s (Southern) Cousin.

Connie’s (Southern) Cousin options, inspired by Paula Deen’s Southern comfort recipes, must be at least 40 percent calories from fat, contain at least two slices of bacon and be deep-fried in pig lard.

While the choices have already begun to appear around the Danforth Campus, the formal launch will happen in the fall with
an Assembly Series lecture by Deen herself.

The outcry from campus diversity groups has been evident but subdued as students struggle to reconcile their distaste for Deen with their love of butter. The speech will be the first major event sponsored by WUChurn, which appealed to Student Union Treasury last month for Deen’s $50,000 honorarium and $2,000 cake budget.
