Seedz Cafe: Vegan ‘eatz’ for absolutely everyone

Katherine Dawson | Contributing Writer

Nestled among the historic coffee shop, yoga studio and ice-cream parlor sprinkled streets of DeMun, sits the occasionally overlooked Seedz Cafe. Just a 15-minute walk from campus, Seedz is situated so that vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike can always find some astoundingly delicious baked goods, smoothies, tacos, salads and more. This cafe offers a wide variety of nutrient dense, plant-based options that any customer, no matter their dietary practices, can enjoy.

In 2014, Cara Schloss and Monty Gralnick decided to share their love of health conscious food. Thus, Seedz Cafe was born. Grounded in nutrition, Seedz Cafe promises not only a delicious selection of food, but a (mostly) very nourishing one as well. Although the menu changes seasonally, it is bursting with hummus, rice, beans, sweet potatoes, kale, avocado and a myriad of fresh fruits and vegetables. Even their baked goods are somewhat healthy (or at least healthier), as it reads on their chalkboard, everything is “baked, never fried.”

Full disclosure, I am vegan; so, you might be a bit skeptical about what you are about to read, but when I say Seedz has the absolute best hazelnut chocolate doughnut, I’m not kidding. You have to try this thing. Beyond that stunningly beautiful creation—seriously, it was one of the best things I have ever eaten—Seedz carries incredible sugar cookies, cake pops, scones, peanut butter cups, “cheezcakes” and more for anyone looking for a sweet pick-me-up.

If you are craving something more than dessert, the Seedz ‘Eatz’ menu is literally amazing. The falafel salad, veggie burger and LTA (lettuce, tempeh, avocado and tomato sandwich) are just a few of my favorites. I have made it my personal mission to try everything on their menu before I graduate. Just recently, I tried the street tacos: three BBQ Jackfruit-filled tacos loaded with onions, jalapenos, cilantro, lime, guacamole and salsa, and I do not have enough good things to say about them. You probably won’t believe me when I say this, but they almost tasted like BBQ pork. I did get my friends to confirm my assertion, and they agreed; so, I hope that helps to convince you.

Other than meals and desserts, Seedz offers smoothies—the tropical being my favorite—coffee, tea and fresh-pressed juices. Even if you don’t have enough time to sit down and indulge, Seedz has an option for you. Right next-door sits Seedz Provisions, which involves more of a grab-and-go experience.

It can be easy to ride off plant-based restaurants simply because they do not offer food you are used to eating. Often, I will ask my friends to go with me, informing them that it is a solely vegan restaurant, and they will ask to go anywhere else. However, I implore you to give this cafe a try. I have managed to convince a few of those originally hesitant friends to accompany me on my almost weekly trips to Seedz, and everyone I have talked to, vegan or not, loves this cozy cafe.
