Op-ed: Re-centering Student Union’s vision

Steven Kish, Speaker of the SU Senate & Alexa Jochims, Speaker of the SU Treasury

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the Student Union Senate and Treasury brought articles of impeachment against the Student Union Election Commissioner in response to student concerns about the handling of the fall 2019 SU election. The Election Commissioner resigned on Wednesday, Nov. 20—as a result, the impeachment proceedings will not continue.

At this time, we want to reaffirm our commitment to our community. Before entering impeachment proceedings on Tuesday night, Senate and Treasury approved a constitutional amendment to level the playing field for our elections: We prepared for a more effective, efficient. and engaging general budget process, and we planned for a campaign to encourage faculty to complete important training to support students in crisis.

We jointly seek to fulfill Student Union’s vision: to responsibly serve and empower every undergraduate student to be a force for change and improvement while fostering and preserving tradition at Washington University in St. Louis. We call upon all Student Union officials—elected and appointed—to center a commitment to this vision, consider the impact of their actions on the students we are here to serve, maintain respect for one another and resolve personal issues in an appropriate manner and maintain a higher standard of professionalism as we serve our community.

Any questions or concerns about Tuesday night’s session can be directed to Steven Kish, speaker of the Senate, or to Alexa Jochims, speaker of the Treasury. Steven is available in the Student Union Office on Thursday, 11/21, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Friday, 11/22, from 2 to 4 p.m.; Alexa is available on Thursday, 11/21, from 1 to 3 p.m. and Friday, 11/22, from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

We will continue to maintain open and consistent communication during this time and encourage you all to make your voices heard on the issues affecting our community.
