Five spooky podcasts to listen to this Halloween

Isabelle Gillman | Staff Writer

Though we can’t celebrate Halloween together this year, there’s no reason we can’t get into the spooky spirit by carving pumpkins, dressing up and listening to spooky podcasts. As a self-proclaimed podcast aficionado, I’ve compiled a list of the five best scary podcasts available on Spotify right now. From corporate villains to serial killers, this list has it all:

1. You’re Wrong About – “Halloween Special! Ed Gein and Slasher Movies”

“You’re Wrong About” is a weekly podcast that reconsiders individuals and the way they’re portrayed in society. This episode tells the story of how Ed Gein became one of America’s most famous serial killers despite not actually being a serial killer. Hosts Sarah Marshall and Mike Hobbes also discuss the 1980s slasher movies inspired by Gein’s murders and how they were received by the public. If you like morbid humor and fun dynamics between two journalists/friends, tune in to “You’re Wrong About”!

2. Morbid: A True Crime Podcast – “The Scream Murder of Cassie Jo Stoddard”

This episode is labeled as a MEGA-Morbid episode. It highlights the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddard, who was killed by two of her friends and classmates after they terrorized her for hours. The friends had wanted to make a movie and know what it felt like to kill someone. “Morbid” is a self-proclaimed “lighthearted nightmare” podcast, hosted by an autopsy technician and a hairstylist who have a love for all things true crime and everything spooky.

3. Crime in Sports – “Elvis Dies Tonight – The Vengefulness of Tim ‘Doc’ Anderson”

Hosts and comedians James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman discuss the story of Tim “Doc” Anderson, a boxer who felt wronged by his slimy manager/promoter named Elvis. Together, the hosts urge the audience to wonder whether it was justified, or simply a delusion caused by boxing-induced brain damage. Sports, crime and comedy combine in “Crime in Sports.”

4. Swindled – “The Hitman (Frank Howard)”

“Swindled” explores white-collar crimes, corporate evil and con artists through narrative storytelling, archival video and inviting and varying soundscapes. Though not necessarily “spooky,” this podcast shines a light on the every-day evils of those at the executive level of corporate America. This episode looks at Frank Howard, a quintessential family man from Carrollton, Texas, who embezzled millions from his employer to fund an affair and the attempted murder of his wife.

5. 48 Hours – “The Hollywood Ripper” (Two-part special)

“48 Hours” is a podcast presented by the CBS News team of the same name. “The Hollywood Ripper” is a two-part special episode that looks at the stories of the four women killed by the same murderer, as well as the sole survivor. Journalist Maureen Maher has been on the trail of serial killer Michael Gargiulo for over ten years. Tune into this episode to see how “48 Hours” helped crack one of the famous Hollywood Ripper cases.

From me and my murder podcasts to you and yours, Happy Halloween! May your night be full of treats (and some tricks).
