WU Performing Arts Department releases 2019-2020 season
The Washington University Performing Arts Department has released their 2019-2020 season calendar. The season will feature theatrical productions all written by female playwrights.
Legally Blonde
The season will open with a powerhouse of 2000’s popular culture, “Legally Blonde: The Musical!” The musical, based on Amanda Brown’s novel and the 2001 film of the same name starring Reese Witherspoon, follows Elle Woods’ empowering journey of self-discovery as she navigates stereotypes and relationships at Harvard Law School. The show will be directed by Annamaria Pileggi and will run Oct. 25-27 & Nov. 1-3.
For Colored Girls
Ntozake Shange’s first work, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf,” is a choreopoem: a series of 20 unique poems choreographed to music. The piece features seven nameless women of color who explore complex stories of loss, heartache, empowerment and sisterhood. The show will be helmed by Ron Himes and run Nov. 21-24.
Men on Boats
Jaclyn Backhaus’ “Men on Boats” is a reimagining of the 1869 Powell Expedition, a historical three-month journey across the Green and Colorado Rivers amidst the largely unexplored Grand Canyon region. In contrast to the play’s title, the show features an all-female cast of bold adventurers. It will be directed by Andrea Urice and run February 21-23, 28-29 and March 1.
Ironbound
The Martyna Majok play “Ironbound” highlights a story of one woman’s unshakeable will. It follows unfulfilled and disheartened Polish immigrant Darja amidst her struggles to build a life in New Jersey over the course of 22 years. Her story will be brought to the stage April 9-12 by director Jeffrey Matthews.
Washington University Dance Theatre will perform their showcase December 6-8, the MFA Dance Concert will be March 21 and Washington University Dance Collective’s show will be held April 3-4, but themes for these shows have not been set.
