WUTV hosts third annual Sweding Festival

Ever think you can make a movie better than the filmmakers did and for way less money? If so, you should come watch some Wash. U. students take on this challenge in WUTV’s third annual Sweding Festival.

“Sweding” originated in the Michel Gondry movie “Be Kind Rewind.” In the film, a movie store clerk accidentally erases the content of all the store’s videos, so the employees decide to remake all the films themselves and tell their customers the new movies are imported from Sweden, hence the name “sweding.”

This year, WUTV lent equipment to six teams planning to make their own sweded videos. Teams got the opportunity to remake whatever film they wanted. This year’s films range from “Avatar” to “Men in Black.”

The remade movies promise to be really funny and entertaining.

“The most entertaining swedes usually contain innovative solutions to the lack of a multi-million dollar budget and imitation of characters in a way that is playful or critical,” said senior Rachel Deitch, one of the leaders of the Sweding Festival. Last year’s winner, a parody of “Top Gun,” did just that.

Deitch thinks that this festival is a creative way for members of Generation Me to put themselves into media. Whether it’s updating our Facebook statuses, tweeting or recreating movies so they are even better than before, we like to mark our place in the world.

WUTV provided all the necessary equipment, so we can guess these films will be high quality. The teams have been working since midnight last Friday, and they have until 9 p.m. on Saturday to turn them in.

Make sure to watch past winners on YouTube (search “WUTV sweded”), and come to the third annual WUTV Sweding Festival Sunday at 6 p.m. in Busch 100.
