Bears overcome Wooster on missed extra point
Sophomore receiver Drew Sexton stiffarms a Wabash University defender on Saturday, Oct. 9. Sexton’s 38-yard reception in the fourth quarter set up a game-winning touchdown in the 14-13 victory over the College of Wooster on Saturday, Oct. 16.
Offensively, senior quarterback Stephen Sherman overcame two early interceptions in Bears territory to throw for one touchdown and run for the winning score from one yard out.
“Although the numbers have been pretty good these past few games, I haven’t been doing anything special,” Sherman said. “The offensive line and the receiver have had some amazing games, and that really makes things easy for me.”
Defensively, senior linebacker Kyle Huber carried the load with 11 tackles, a career high. Freshman safety Scott O’Brien added a career-high nine tackles and senior defensive lineman John Schneider blocked a 27-yard field goal.
“The coverages we ran really helped with the run defense,” O’Brien said. “Our [defensive backs] had great coverage, so I could play the run faster and more aggressively and help the linebackers and [defensive line] with run defense.”
Wash. U. started the game slowly on offense. After a punt on the team’s first possession, Sherman was intercepted on the third play of the next drive. However, the Red and Green defense stopped the Fighting Scots on fourth and 11 from the Bears’ 36-yard line to give the offense the ball back.
Four plays later, Sherman was intercepted again at the Wash. U. 22-yard line. Wooster (3-3) drove to the Bears’ six-yard line before the drive stalled. Schneider blocked the ensuing field goal attempt to keep the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard.
“Everyone in general on defense has really stepped up their game,” O’Brien said. “Even when the offense struggles, we still can play well and at a high level.”
After Wooster found the end zone on their first drive of the second quarter, the Bears marched down the field and tied the game at 7. Sherman finished the nine-play, 81-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Tom Gulyas.
With a scoreless third quarter in hand, Wash. U. began its first drive of the fourth quarter from its own 28-yard line and marched to the end zone in six plays, highlighted by sophomore wide receiver Drew Sexton’s 38-yard reception on third and 5.
Sherman rushed into the end zone for the winning touchdown with 8:12 left to play, giving the Bears their first lead of the game and setting the stage for Wooster’s potentially game-tying touchdown and extra point.
“We’re really starting to play to our full potential as an offense and as an entire team,” Sherman said. “These past few weeks, we’ve seen what we’re capable of, and we’re not going to be satisfied if we don’t carry this momentum through the rest of our schedule.”
The Bears (4-2) resume play on Saturday, Oct. 23 at Francis Field against Oberlin College. The game begins at 1 p.m. and is the final game before the beginning of conference play. The Yeomen (2-4) are coming off a 42-21 loss to Wabash College, whom the Bears defeated 24-20 earlier in the season.
