‘AAAHHH!!!’: Rachel Chinouriri’s sophomore album allures and awes

British indie-pop-rock star Rachel Chinouriri has finally graced us with a second album, “I think I spoke too soon.” This album is Chinouriri at her most confident, most messy, and most free. In other words, it’s the perfect album for a young twenty-something going through the ups and downs of love, friendship, and the call of the dance floor.

A twinkling keyboard riff accompanies a perfect subtle beat to seduce listeners in “Pretty girls,” an ode to glitter-filled nights of dancing that contains vulnerable lyrics about self-uncertainty. For track four, Chinouriri presents the perfect getting-ready song for that night out on the town you’re about to enjoy: “Favorite desperation.” This track is reminiscent of her debut album, “What A Devastating Turn of Events,” with its pop-rock backing and penchant for bad (but fun) romantic decisions. Exactly in the middle of the tracklist, Chinouriri channels the casual, flirty indie-rock of Royal Otis with “AAAHHH!!!” the perfect sing-along track. “Broken chair” and “Make believe” are anthems for the torture and thrill of a night out on the town with a certain someone that probably isn’t the best for you. (Yeah, she’s talking to you.)

At 27, Chinouriri has been climbing streaming charts slowly but steadily, with the BBC characterizing her arrival on the popular music scene as a “slow burn.” Chinouriri shows off her vocal range on “Parasite” near the end of the album, where she drops intense percussion and jagged baselines for a gorgeous build song. If you’re a fan of insanely cool production that’s somehow messy and perfectly cohesive, “The good fight” is the song for you.

If there’s anything you should know about Chinouriri, though, it’s that she knows how to hold your attention until the very end of a song. The all-consuming final chorus of “Crash this car,” the final track, sums up the star and her music perfectly: mesmerizing. To anyone who has plans to get ready with the girls, have a night out, stay in, go for a midnight drive, dated someone they regretted, or are going out with someone new: this album is for you.
