This week in WU history: Elections, milk thieves and students taped to walls

November has proven to be a historically wild time for the Washington University campus, according to the Student Life archives.

This week in Washington University history…

November 10, 1933

Thought no-shave-November was a 2000s trend? Well, think again. Wash. U. has been doing this thing for a while, try at least 85 years. This time in 1933, men held a contest for the best beard grown within a week. They even got as serious as to switch up the measuring devices used based on one’s education status (even though I’m not quite sure what that has to do with beards).

Remember those iconic “Got Milk” posters? Well this student sure had plenty after stealing around 60 cases of Pevely milk. The students admittedly loaded up a moving truck after moving onto the South 40, headed over to Schnucks, and left with 60 cases of milk. But these Wash. U. students weren’t the only ones. The occurrences collectively amongst the mass of college students stealing milk cost the milk company around $300,000 annually. But my question to the masses: How many uses can you get out of 60 cases of milk before it goes bad?

Apparently, in an effort to teach the laws and happenings of physics, professors saw the most suitable way to get the point across through taping students to walls in Mallinckrodt Center. Many only lasted for seconds, the longest and winner of the taped-to-wall contest hanging for a cool five minutes and 54 seconds. How’s that for science?

Seeing as pre-meds have always been around at Washington University, the school has offered and continues to offer MCAT review sessions, to get those scores where they need to be for med school. The only difference between the 2000 and 2018 MCAT review sessions? A mere $825. If only that $375 price tag were still around. The early-2000s really were a better time.

This is probably (definitely) the most important thing on this page, so let this be a PSA: Your vote matters. If everyone goes into this process with the mentality of one vote being unimportant, no one will vote. And with that, so much potential for American change and legitimate reflection of the people’s needs goes down the drain. You have the power to change the way the world around you is operating. Please, go vote.

Those are only a few of the most noteworthy screenshots for this week. Until the next roundup, the rest of the archive can be found here.
