Singer, songwriter Jason Derulo to headline WILD
Pop artist Jason Derulo, known for hit singles such as “Talk Dirty” and “Whatcha Say,” will headline spring WILD, Social Programming Board announced Thursday.
Derulo will perform in Brookings Quadrangle April 28, the last day of classes. Rhythm and blues singer Natalie La Rose will open for the Teen Choice Award-winning singer.
While in some past years the programming board has brought in multiple headliners to give WILD a more festival-like feel, this year SPB has elected to only have one opener to allow extended play time for both artists.
Due to the Oct. 9 presidential debate, the concert, typically held semesterly, was not put on this fall. However, SPB operated with a nearly doubled talent budget for this spring’s concert and an increased production budget.
SPB noted that this led to increased financial flexibility with respect to choosing talent and will allow them to both increase the scale of the events leading up to WILD week as well as add some extra surprises to the concert.
Sophomore and SPB president Noah Truwit said that SPB is excited to have Derulo perform and noted that the organization has other events planned in the week leading up to WILD to drum up student interest in the concert.
“Derulo’s the perfect artist for WILD this year,” he said. “We picked Derulo due to some strong feedback from students…He ranked very highly on the survey.”
Sophomore Zach Alter, SPB’s WILD director, said that Derulo is a good fit for this year’s WILD because he has had hit songs spanning a number of years, from 2009 to the present with his new single “Swalla.”
“He’s a perfect pick for Wash. U. because he has all the throwback hits and also had a hit song in 2015,” he said.
