Four social Greek organizations placed on social probation for alcohol violations

Tau Kappa Epsilon is on social probation for serving hard alcohol at a dry mixer with Alpha Omicron Pi, which is also on social probation. According to Washington University’s University Standing and Conduct Status website for fraternities and sororities, Chi Omega is on social probation, and Sigma Chi is on both social probation and housing probation.

Sigma Chi is on housing and social probation for damage to the house and multiple alcohol violations, and Chi Omega is on social probation for unregistered social activity and alcohol violation.

During the time of social probation, chapters may not host on-campus or off-campus social events. Chapters on housing probation may not host on-campus social events or have non-resident members access the chapter house.

In an email to Student Life, Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Austin Sandoval-Sweeney declined to elaborate on the events that led to TKE’s probation beyond what was posted on the Campus Life Website, citing a need to “honor the integrity of the conduct progress.”

“It’s very important to me that we are open and transparent with our community regarding chapters’ statuses and standings, which is why we post those for anyone to be able to access, along with a descriptor as to why the chapters have the standings and statuses that they currently have,” Sweeney wrote.

This is not the first time TKE has been on social probation—the fraternity was also placed on probation Feb. 20 for violating the new member recruitment and education processes in fall 2018.

“This isn’t a unique standing, as other chapters are also on social probation,” Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life Molly Bennett wrote in a statement to Student Life. “We do this to provide clarity to the community, but do not divulge case specifics.”

Interfraternity Council President senior Jimmy Abraham says the next step for TKE will most likely be some form of alcohol prevention training.

“Usually, for something like that there’s an educational piece potentially involving new members if they were involved at all,” Abraham said.

Alpha Omicron Pi President Roschan Rao expressed the sorority’s commitment to its members’ safety.

“We respect the social policy, and we work hard to prioritize the safety of our members,” Rao wrote in a statement to Student Life.

TKE President Ben Moore did not respond to a request to comment.
Sigma Chi President Chris Mutascio did not respond to a request to comment.
Chi Omega President India Shelley declined to comment.
