A bucket list of sorts
It’s the last day of classes! For some of us, it’s our last day of class in college. All of these “last days” got me thinking about a bucket list of sorts—random places here and there I’m glad I’ve been to over the past four years. Student Life’s Nightlife column has obviously offered some great places to check out (Morgan Street, Lumiere Place), but I wanted to offer a few additions myself. Here they are:
1. Third Degree Glass Factory
Whether you are taking a glasswork class here or just coming in on the weekend to make a glass paperweight, Third Degree is a great place to spend some time. The glass factory has a very laid-back, relaxed atmosphere, with instructors who are extremely friendly and willing to help you make some very cool glass pieces. Every third Friday of the month they hold an event at night with different glass activities and live entertainment. Each semester, there is also a show of Wash. U. student glasswork on display.
2. A St. Louis public school
There is currently a large national debate surrounding the future direction of public education. St. Louis public schools are a perfect microcosm of many of these political debates—so it’s a good place to check out what the issues are like for yourself. Many teachers are more than happy to have Wash. U. students come in and help out in their classroom, and even plan an activity. There are also many opportunities to volunteer with after-school programs in many of the public schools.
3. A Treasury meeting
Yes, I am suggesting that you should attend at least one Student Union meeting. Treasury has a lot of power; this 19-person body is in charge of allocating a good portion of the Student Activities Fee to student groups. Check out a meeting to see what kinds of issues surrounding student group programming are discussed and how funding decisions are determined. For some, it will be an eye opening experience and you may then choose to apply for the next open Treasury seat. For others, it may make you cry.
4. Sweetie Pie’s
Pretty straightforward. Great home-cooked-feeling food, many options to choose from, and very affordable. The people working there are extremely friendly, and there is a great scene of customers in the restaurant. You will probably not be able to eat for hours after this meal.
5. John Donut
A donut shop on South Broadway that’s open late at night. It’s a great place to head after going out. There are many flavors of donuts to choose from, and the two men behind the counter are more than happy to share their personal recommendations with you. The donuts are exploding with good flavor, and you will definitely end up snagging a half dozen to bring home.
So that’s it. Get going, and check some of these places out while you still have some time!
