Put on your olive waffle shirts and prepare your blood slides because “Dexter” premieres its fifth season on Sunday, which means you will have to wait until Monday or Tuesday before your favorite sketchy streaming site can upload it. No, Washington University does not carry Showtime, meaning that you may have to get violent in securing your Megavideo minutes. Luckily for you, “Dexter” will teach you everything you need to know for when things get bloody.

The show follows Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police, who goes around and kills people in his downtime. His sister, Deb, works as a detective for the same department as Dexter. Their father, Harry, was a cop before he died. A while back, he adopted Dexter, recognized his developing sociopathy, and, using cop skills, taught him a code of vigilante justice to save him from getting caught. Harry didn’t really pay attention to Deb, so she became a cop to make him proud.

If you haven’t seen the previous seasons, they come highly recommended. They balance creepy and funny effortlessly and get just the right amount of frantic as the seasons sprint the finish. Last season ended with Dexter finding his wife, Rita, victim to another serial killer, and the trailer for this season suggests that he must prove his innocence. Still, even if this year’s story unprecedentedly drops the ball, simply watching Michael C. Hall’s angled jawbones flicker through his sinister grin will still rank “Dexter” among the most compelling shows out there this season.
