We’re going to take a break from popular music to showcase another genre near to Wash. U. students’ hearts. That’s right—16th century sacred music performed in a cathedral by an all-male a cappella ensemble. We’re not joking either; as far as vocal performers go, Chanticleer’s members are legit. Like, legit in the sense that they perform with the New York Philharmonic and premiere pieces by some of the world’s most renowned composers. They even have won a Grammy. Tonight, Chanticleer will mostly perform their bread-and-butter of Renaissance compositions from Italy, France, Spain and England, including “Ave Regina Cælorum” and John Sheppard’s “Our Father.” The ensemble will also perform more modern literature such as compositions by Benjamin Britten and Kirke Mechem. As a bonus, all of this music is performed in the most striking building in the city. Catholic or not, a tour of the Basilica’s expansive mosaics and dueling pipe organs should be on everyone’s Wash. U. bucket list. What better time to visit than tonight, when the cathedral’s finely-tuned acoustics will be on full display.
