5.0 | Nelly

| Cadenza Reporter

Nelly’s “5.0” is a definite improvement over his last album, “Brass Knuckles,” but it doesn’t live up to the St. Louisan’s best hits and is a largely forgettable effort. It’s not a bad album by any means; it’s just too basic to merit a third or fourth listen.

“Move That Body,” featuring hitmakers T-Pain and Akon, should be the next club hit. Instead, it’s forgettable at best and painful at worst. And if you’re going to title a track “I’m Number 1” and collaborate with noted yell-rapping enthusiast DJ Khaled and Birdman on it, it should be loud, angry and worthy of being called “number one.”

That’s not to say there aren’t a few gems, like the Notorious B.I.G.-sampling and Diddy-featuring “1000 Stacks.” On another track, “She’s So Fly,” Nelly out-raps T.I.—no small feat. The best song is also, in a rare alignment of musical quality and record sales, the most popular one: the reflective single “Just a Dream.” It’s a good album, but Nelly can do better.
