Bear Breakdown: Soccer and volleyball continue strong start to season

Washington University’s women’s and men’s soccer teams combined for a 5-0 week of non-conference play, women’s volleyball expanded their win streak to eight straight matches, women’s golf competed for a conference championship, and men’s tennis competed against Division I opponents. Here’s everything you need to know about WashU sports from the week of Sept. 9-15.
No. 1 Women’s Soccer
Women’s soccer continued their perfect start to the season with three more wins over the week. In their first road trip of the 2024 campaign, the Bears dominated, outscoring Westminster College, Depauw University, and Rhodes College by a combined margin of 10-0. Up next, the Bears will host Illinois Wesleyan University at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Men’s Soccer
After a tough weekend last week, men’s soccer returned to their winning ways. The Bears cruised past Greenville University 5-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and then beat Webster University 7-2 on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Bears return to play on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. against Principia College.
No. 14 Women’s Volleyball
After winning three straight games at the East-West Battle, No. 14 women’s volleyball continued their impressive stretch of non-conference play. The Bears swept neighbors Fontbonne University 3-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 11, before going 4-0 at the Loras Invitational in Iowa over the weekend. WashU will return to home for three games next weekend in the Bear Invite. The Bears, who improved to 9-2 on the season, are now just two weeks away from the start of University Athletic Association (UAA) play against No. 5 Emory University on Sept. 28.
No. 10 Women’s Golf
No. 10 women’s golf finished third at the UAA championships to start their season. After a loss to No. 2 Emory in the first match, the Bears earned the third-place finish, defeating No. 17 New York University 3-2. On Sept. 14 and 15, the Bears won the 19-team Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic, beating second-place Illinois Wesleyan University by 12 strokes. Junior Tiffany Chan recorded the best individual score of 142, and sophomore Amy Beanblossom tied for second.
Men’s Tennis
Men’s tennis competed in two tournaments over the weekend, sending six players to compete against Division I competition at the River Forest Tournament hosted by Northern Illinois University, and hosting a one-day WashU Invite. At the River Forest Tournament, junior Case Fagan finished sixth in the No. 2 singles bracket, sophomore Nathan Tam finished fourth in the No. 3 singles bracket, and senior John Fakouri and sophomore Danny Radke finished fifth in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles brackets, respectively. The duo of junior Colin Scruggs and Fagan finished second in the top doubles bracket, falling in a tiebreak to a team from Eastern Illinois University.
