A petition to recall sophomore Sonal Churiwal as the current Student Union (SU) Speaker of the Senate due to allegations of improper conduct, was uploaded onto Washington University’s Group Organizer (WUGO) website, March 26.
The petition asks that Churiwal be removed “for the sake of unity, justice, and tolerance” due to alleged abuse of power, violation of neutrality rules, threats to expel senators, and generally creating a “culture of fear.” The petition does not have an author’s name attached to it.
Campaigning for Student Union elections begins on Monday but only one slate has declared interest for executive positions—and the slate has yet to find all necessary members. The slate, headed by presidential candidate and current Vice President of Administration, junior Matt Re, has not yet selected a candidate for Vice President of Finance.
Student Union Senate and Treasury voted on several SU election reforms, which were proposed by the election commissioners. The reforms aim to make elections more competitive, open and fair. Proposals ranged from new systems of voting to more minute details about qualifications and definitions of positions.
