BREAKING: Fahey hired by University of Illinois
Nancy Fahey, longtime head coach of the Washington University women’s basketball team, will join the University of Illinois to lead its Division I program, according to the Champaign, Ill.-based News Gazette.
In her 31 years with the Bears, Fahey accumulated a 737-133 record, five national championships, four runner-up finishes, 29 NCAA tournament appearances and became the first ever Division III representative in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
This year, Fahey led the Red and Green to a 26-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.
Fahey will join former Washington University Athletic Director Josh Whitman as the second Bear to make the transition to Illinois. Whitman was tapped to head Illinois’ athletic program last February after spending two years at the Bears’ helm. Whitman is expected to officially announce the hiring later this week.
Fahey takes over a sputtering Illini program that owns a 61-94 record in the past five seasons.
