Five UK bands to check out if you like the Arctic Monkeys
If you’re looking forward to seeing the Arctic Monkeys at LouFest this weekend, then here are five other UK-based bands you might want to check out.
The Vaccines
A relatively young breakout band, The Vaccines had the best-selling debut album of 2011 and opened for The Arctic Monkeys at several gigs that same year. Building a more “hard rock” feeling into their music, they’ve released two studio albums and are establishing their reputation in both England and the U.S.
The Kooks
More pop-oriented than the Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks have songs that are upbeat, lyrical and damn catchy. With four albums out — including their newest, “Listen,” which debuted just this week — they are a fun band to explore and follow as they continue to expand their collection.
Kaiser Chiefs
Fresh off the release of their newest album, “Education, Education, Education & War,” The Kaiser Chiefs are touring again and held the number-one spot in the album chart earlier this year. This band builds emotion by tending to sporadically alternate dreamy guitar with a heavier bass sound. While “Ruby” (below) is their most popular song, also check out “I Predict A Riot” for an amazing buildup to the famous chorus.
The Fratellis
This Scottish band has definitely matured over the years. From it’s loud and rowdy first album, “Costello Music,” to the much smoother and more lyrical “Here We Stand,” the band has only gotten better with time. After a brief hiatus, they’ve returned with the phenomenal “We Need Medicine” and the amazing (and aptly titled) single “Rock N Roll Will Break Your Heart.”
The Wombats
Another young band, The Wombats only have two albums out, but have been working on a third for almost three years. The Liverpool band mixes nonsensical yet somehow meaningful lyrics with pop sounds and fantastic guitar to create assured foot-tappers. Check out “Your Body is a Weapon,” the preview single for their next album — it’s guaranteed to get stuck in your head.
Honorable mention: The 1975
This band will be playing alongside the Arctic Monkeys at LouFest and, while still developing, with only their debut album released so far, they are gaining momentum. With more influence from electro and pop music, this band has a distinctly smooth, slinky sound.
Bonus! The Last Shadow Puppets
Check out The Last Shadow Puppets, a band that might sound suspiciously like Arctic Monkeys as they both share a lead singer, Alex Turner. This award-winning supergroup with Turner and Miles Kane have only released one album (“The Age of the Understatement”), but it’s definitely worth a listen.
