| Managing Editor

Freshman Alec Becker died in his hometown of Dallas, Texas Feb. 6. Becker graduated from Greenhill School before attending Washington University. He was 18 years old.

Funeral services for Becker were held Feb. 9 at Temple Emanu-El in Dallas.

According to Becker’s obituary on Dignity Memorial, Becker died by suicide.

Co-director of Chabad Rabbi Hershey Novack knew Becker personally and is one of the many people grieving his loss. Novack wanted students to know there are many resources available for anyone coping with mental health issues.

“You know, it’s a sad time and students who are suffering need to know that there’s an entire community and a wealth of resources available to them and their peers…communities and individuals must and do stick up for each other,” Novack said.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Rob Wild spoke on behalf of the University community to say that Becker will be missed and to offer support.

“We know Alec was well liked by those who knew him in high school and the new friends he had made here at Wash. U. during the fall,” Wild said. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time and we will continue to offer support to those affected by this loss.”

The family requested that donations be made to the Grant Halliburton Foundation, an advocacy organization for mental health, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
