The Washington University Police Department alerted students to an aggravated assault of a student early Feb. 9, in a security memo sent later that day.

According to the memo, a male Washington University student was assaulted near Delmar Boulevard and Westgate Avenue while walking along the north side of Delmar around 12:30 a.m. The student received minor injuries after being slashed with a sharp object. The suspect yelled something unintelligible, then ran east.

The incident follows two recent armed robberies of University students, Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, and comes after Chancellor Andrew Martin’s call for an increased WUPD presence in off-campus neighborhoods and an expansion of off-campus shuttles at the start of this semester.

According to WUPD Chief of Police Mark Glenn, WUPD readjusted its bike team after the incidents, Jan. 29 and Feb. 1. They plan to follow up with the University City Police Department this week to evaluate other ways they can enhance patrol techniques following these three incidents.

Glenn also urged students to take advantage of new campus shuttle options, which he emphasized were put in place not just for convenience, but for safety.

The University City Police Department is currently investigating the incident, and WUPD has urged students to remain cautious while walking.

“Be alert to your surroundings,” Glenn said. “Try to know what’s going on. Take safety strategies when you’re walking. I always remind people to trust their instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not.”
