Francis Field will be renamed Francis Olympic Stadium in the near future pending final approval, St. Louis Sports Commission President Frank Viverito and St. Louis Olympic Legacy Committee Chairman Michael Loynd said Thursday.

The move, which has preliminary approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), still requires final approval from the IOC and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Viverito plans to file the paperwork this week.

The rebranding of the 116-year-old facility, officially David R. Francis Field in honor of the 1870 Wash. U. graduate, should be formalized in the upcoming weeks, but could happen even sooner.

“If Mike has anything to say about it, it’ll be Tuesday,” Viverito said.

Regardless, Viverito said the change is close to being completed.

“It would be as soon as we can,” Viverito said. “Whether that’s days, weeks or months, I’m not sure, but it would basically take just the creation and execution of a license agreement and then a rededication. So, I think we’re hopefully looking at a fairly short period of time.”

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if [Chancellor] Mark [Wrighton] makes an announcement tomorrow,” Loynd added.
