The Washington University tennis teams encountered success this weekend, as both the men and women beat DePauw University in Forest Park on Saturday afternoon and the men defeated Maryville University at home at the Tao Tennis Center Monday.
Across her first two seasons on the Washington University women’s tennis team, junior Hannah Johnston posted a 6-1 record in singles. Now, after winning her first match of the year in the Bears’ victory over Northern Iowa last Saturday, she’s looking to add to that record.
With the win, the Bears improved to 1-1 on the season.
“When someone is a student of the game and has expertise and enthusiasm, that’s a scary combination,” Director of Athletics Anthony Azama said.
Madara, who played for the Bears from 2009-2013 before serving as an assistant coach from 2013-2015, will replace Kelly Stahlhuth, who resigned in July after 15 seasons leading the team.
Women’s tennis players have worked this summer to find a replacement for head coach Kelly Stahlhuth, who resigned in July.
Freshman Sophia Huynh and sophomore Hannah Johnston have spent years playing tennis together both in St. Louis and St. John’s School in Houston.
After an excellent spring invitational season, Washington University’s track and tennis teams will turn their attention towards their conference championships.
