So, now that the flames from the WUStock reveal have died down, it’s time to consider what we have left in the ashes. Our artist is MKTO, and if you (like a large part of the student body) are scratching your head in confusion, then just pull up YouTube and search its most famous single, “Classic.” If you’re going to know anything by the pop/hip-hop duo of Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller, that song is the one.
Although there may not be as many shows starting their run in the winter, there is some real quality hidden among the deluge of shows like “The Bachelor.” Here are five of the best new shows airing or about to air this winter that you should have your eye out for.
Take an initial listen to Fifth Harmony’s latest album, “Reflection,” and you might think that you’re listening to a compilation rather than a cohesive release.
What better time to get off campus and spend a few hours lost in live music than syllabus week? I certainly can’t think of one—and this upcoming Friday will present the perfect opportunity when Jukebox the Ghost visits St. Louis and posts up in the intimate yet always enjoyable venue The Ready Room. Even if you’ve never heard of Jukebox the Ghost, this three-piece indie pop outfit should be a perfect fit for fans of bands like Ra Ra Riot or Givers.
To sum up “Talking is Hard”: it is a good album, but some of the trademark energy is gone. The album’s lead single, “Shut Up and Dance,” is more musically aligned with the first release, and that’s probably why the band picked it for the single.
After the day’s festivities, WILDs in the past have always seemed like a bit of an anti-climax. Between the students who don’t make it and those who prefer enjoying the inflatable couches to dancing, the energy never seems to match the hype behind the event. This WILD was noticeably different.
Turn on a country radio station these days and after a while you’ll feel like you’re listening to the same song about trucks and beer over and over again. A full run-through Florida Georgia Line’s new album, “Anything Goes,” produces pretty much a similar experience; only a couple of slower tracks offset the list of rollicking country songs about back roads and day drinking that all seem to blend together around about the halfway mark.
If you want to feel particularly “Fancy” this Tuesday night, head on down to The Ready Room in the colorful Grove neighborhood to see Charli XCX hit the stage and wow the crowd with her trademark live show.
If you missed St. Lucia playing the Gargoyle last semester—maybe you were abroad or your evening power-nap turned into a four-hour marathon—or you just enjoyed his last show so much that you can’t miss the opportunity to see him again, now’s your chance.
If you don’t remember scream-singing along to B*Witched’s1998 hit single “C’est La Vie” (admittedly, this is less likely if you weren’t a girl), then you probably missed out on a large part of childhood.
