There’s no doubt that Jewish culture at Washington University is thriving. Part of that success comes from the Jewish Student Union’s (JSU) Reform Chavurah, which is making a comeback on campus.
Junior and Reform Jewish student Matt Adler started the Reform Chavurah within the Jewish Student Union.
“Our mission is to create a welcoming space for students to explore Reform Judaism through social, religious and social action activities,” said Adler
Since its establishment, Reform Chavurah has grown to encompass a board of nine officers and is still expanding. In the fall of 2006 alone, over 70 people participated in the group’s events.
If there is one thing this group is not, it is lazy. Some of this group’s past events have included text studies with guest speakers and free dinners, weekly Friday night services at Hillel and a party in the Village house, with “Kosher Twister.”
Reform Chavurah also has big plans for this semester.
“KESHER, the college branch of the Union for Reform Judaism, [has selected Wash. U.] to be the host of this year’s Leadership Training Seminar, in which 100 student leaders from across the country will converge on [campus],” relayed Adler, excitedly.
To be selected as the host for this event is a great honor and the members of Reform Chavurah are very excited. This event will be taking place in March. As of now, the group is already well on its way to planning more events.
Reform Chavurah wishes to extend an invitation to all students who are interested in learning about Reform Judaism in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
