Baseball lost its first game of the season, but was ranked first in the nation for the first time this year.
The contests were the team’s first since March 8 of last year.
Both Bears Baseball and Softball emerged from the weekend with victorious series.
The Bears made a mockery of the postseason’s opening weekend, treating it as a continuation of the regular season with a pair of shutouts at Francis Olympic Stadium. With a 5-0 win over Westminster College Saturday and a 3-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday, Wash. U. moved to 19-0 in 2018.
The Washington University women’s soccer team will host first and second round play of the NCAA Division III tournament for the third straight season this Saturday and Sunday. Wash. U., who will enter the tournament after completing an undefeated regular season, has played crushing defense all year.
The Washington University volleyball team rebounded from a 3-0 loss at the hands of then-No. 12 Emory University to beat Westminster College in straight sets Tuesday. The now-No. 12 Bears have won eight of their last nine games, bringing their record to 19-5.
While it’s still playoff season for most Washington University fall sports teams, the men’s and women’s basketball teams are just getting started. In this week’s season openers, the Washington University men’s basketball team held on for a slim 60-59 victory at Webster University, while the women’s team coasted to an 83-60 win against Westminster College at the Field House.
After playing one home game in the past seven weeks, the Washington University volleyball team returned to the Field House in impressive fashion, winning all four of the slated matches in straight sets for the first time since 2012.
Despite generating numerous scoring chances and dominating possession, the Washington University men’s soccer team was stuck in a scoreless deadlock for most of the game against Westminster College (Mo.). Yet, sophomore Jake Shapiro’s goal in the 80th minute lifted the Bears to a 1-0 victory and gave head coach Joe Clarke his 200th victory as Wash. U.’s coach in his 18th season at the helm.
The No. 24 Washington University softball team took three of four games this weekend to keep its NCAA tournament hopes alive. On Sunday, the Bears split a doubleheader with Blackburn College on the road, winning the first game 9-1 but falling 5-1 in the second game.
