A last-minute change in the way block funding will be allocated for next year has left some student groups scrambling to put together budgets that would normally be due in the spring. Five block funded groups, Uncle Joe’s, Campus Y, Emergency Support Team, S.A.R.A.H.
KWUR may not have come off the air, but its transmitter was functioning at below 10 percent of its original capacity last week when the group hired engineers from the Society of Broadcast Engineers to check up on its equipment. “They laughed when they saw our transmitter,” senior Robert Ling III, treasurer of KWUR, said.
Every spring, student groups have the opportunity to appeal for block funding from Student Union. These requests appear on the ballot and must receive a two-thirds majority to be approved. Block funding appeals guarantee the funded amount for two years, but if a group is approved for block funding, it cannot appeal for any additional SU funding.
The Athletic Complex may feel some financial hardships in the coming year. According to Student Body President Jeff Nelson, supporters of block funding for the Athletic Complex (AC) did not gather the 900 required signatures to get the initiative on the ballot. Two years ago, the AC received block funding for two years at $60,000 per year.
