Women’s soccer survives UAA road trip unscathed, finishes weekend 1-0-1
Junior Lee Ann Felder dribbles the ball down the field in the Bears’ last home game against Emory University on Oct. 3. Her game-winning goal on Oct. 15 was scored in the first overtime against Case Western Reserve University.
The Bears currently sit second in the University Athletic Association standings with eight points while No. 24 University of Chicago has earned nine points in UAA matches.
Sunday’s game against the Yellowjackets was a physical contest, in which five players sustained nosebleeds from contact. Rochester came out firing in the first half with eight shots, three on goal, while the Bears only had two from junior captain Emma Brown.
“They came out hard, and we knew they would be very tough,” senior captain Julie Tembunkiart said.
In the second period, Rochester continued shooting, with five of nine second half shots coming in the first ten minutes. Wash. U. attempted just three shots.
The Bears were man-marking Rochester’s two forwards, who head coach Jim Conlon recognized as two of the best forwards in the conference. The defense stayed strong, and Jaques saved all four shots on goal in the half.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the game was sent into overtime, but no goals were scored in the additional two periods. “We came out from the first whistle and got progressively better,” junior Lee Ann Felder said.
The Bears began to pick up their intensity during overtime play, limiting the Yellow Jackets to one shot while attempting three in the period.
This was the team’s seventh shutout of the season.
“We shut them out, and we go into [the] conference bye-week undefeated and without giving up a goal, which are two great achievements,” Conlon said.
In Friday’s game, Case Western controlled the first half of play. The Spartans had two prime opportunities to score, both of which were stopped by Jaques. In the sixth minute, junior Laura Gabster rocketed a free kick towards the goal that Jaques saved off the crossbar. Sophomore Kendra Simmons was left unmarked inside the box in the 25th minute, but Jaques punched the ball out of bounds.
The Bears’ only shot came at 38:38, off of a short corner played back to sophomore Nicole Martin, who sent a cross into the box that was headed wide by freshman Jessica Johnson.
“They came out very strong but we knew from the kick-off that we had the advantage,” Tembunkiart said.
In the 55th minute, Jaques made another stellar save by deflecting a point-blank shot by Spartans junior Rebecca Vaughan. Although Wash. U. outshot Case 8-7 in the second half, neither team could find the back of the net in regulation.
In the first overtime, Brown passed the ball to freshman Kate Doyle in the corner, who sent a cross into the box to Felder. Felder shot the ball into the far corner, securing the win for the Bears.
“It was our first win in overtime, which was really exciting,” Felder said. “It was a great pass from Emma to Doyle who hit it right to me.”
Both teams recorded 11 shots, and the Spartans had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Jaques made six saves and lowered her goals against average on the season to 0.50.
“She’s got goalie goggles. Both teams were really pressuring, and she got a fist on in every time and punched it out,” Tembunkiart said.
The Bears (7-5-2, 2-0-2 UAA) face Fontbonne University (6-5-1) on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. on Francis Field.
