Men’s soccer battles to stalemate against No. 1 Chicago

| Staff Reporter

In a quiet conclusion to what has been a roller coaster of regular season play, the Washington University men’s soccer team posted a 0-0 tie against undefeated No. 1 University of Chicago in double overtime Saturday night.

Fitting for the team’s final home game and senior night, seniors Grant Baltes and Nick Tannenbaum led the Bears with three shots and four saves, respectively. Up against a strong Bears defense, the Maroons managed 12 shots, two off their season low.

Chicago did hold a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half, forcing the Bears to make three saves, two from Tannenbaum and one team save from junior Andrew Zingone.

Starting in the 61st minute, the Maroons had to play a man down, after their starting forward was issued a red card for kicking a Wash. U. player in the face while going for ball. Head coach Joe Clarke was ready to admit the fortunate break the Bears got.

“I thought it was a bad call—it was a break for us—but a bad call for the guy to be kicked out of the game,” Clarke said. “Now, that kid has to sit out the first game of the NCAA tournament.”

Junior back Chris Rieger agreed.

“I think the other team played well; it was unfortunate for them that they had a red card. I would have liked to play against them with their 11 man squad,” Rieger said.

Even with the numbers advantage, the Bears still could not break through. Their best chance came during the second overtime, when a shot from senior Kevin Goon forced the Chicago goalkeeper to make a leaping save.

The Bears finish the regular season at 10-4-2. Now, they must rely on an at-large bid to enter the NCAA tournament. The selection show will take place Nov. 7 at noon.
