Bear Breakdown: Track and field hosts Distance Carnival and Invite, baseball and softball begin conference play

Men’s and women’s track won the WashU Invite, baseball went 3-1 against NYU, and softball split a four game series with Brandeis to begin University Athletic Association (UAA) play. Women’s golf also competed in their second tournament of the season and tennis continued their winning ways against nationally ranked opponents. Here’s everything you need to know about WashU athletics from the past week, March 25-31.
Track and Field
The track and field team hosted the WashU Distance Carnival and WashU Invite on Mar. 28-30. Both the mens and womens team placed first in the WashU Invite, which included UAA rival University of Chicago, recording 14 first place finishes among the two teams. At the WashU Invite, senior Emma Kelley set the new school record in the 400 meter run with a time of 54.68 seconds. At the Distance Carnival, senior Cullen Capuano recorded the second fastest time in the 5,000 meter in program history, running a time of 14:12.02 and placing 14th in the meet. The Bears notched 17 top-15 finishes across 10 events. The Bears will take to the track next against Illinois College on April 6 to begin a string of dual meets leading up to the UAA Championships on April 27 and 28.
Baseball
Baseball hosted New York University in their first UAA competition, going 3-1 on the four game series that was played on March 29-30. The Bears biggest victory came in their second game of the series, beating the NYU Violets 14-8. After WashU won the first three games of the series, the Violets handed them their only loss on Sunday defeating WashU 12-0 in seven innings. The Bears play Fontbonne University on April 3 and Rose-Hulman on April 10 before continuing UAA play against Emory University in their last home weekend on April 12-14.
Softball
Softball began their UAA season by splitting a four game series with Brandeis University on March 29-31. It was an up and down weekend for the team, who opened the series falling to Brandies 4-2 and closed it with their largest win of the weekend, defeating the Judges 9-1. After the weekend, WashU sits 13-7 overall on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The Bears will travel to New York to face New York University to continue their UAA season on April 5-7.
Women’s Tennis
The No. 10 women’s tennis team defeated No. 9 Trinity University (Texas) 6-3 and swept No. 29 Southwestern University 9-0 on March 29 and 30. The win over Trinity marked their first time defeating a top 10 team since 2019. Since losing to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps over spring break, the Bears have won five in a row, and move to 10-2 on the season. They will take to the court next at the Madison Invitational on April 5 and 6 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Men’s Tennis
The No. 7 men’s tennis team fell to No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-2 before defeating Skidmore College 5-2 on March 29. The next day, the team faced off against No. 9 Trinity University (Texas) and fell 4-3 to the Tigers. Doubles matches proved a strength for the Bears winning all three against Skidmore and Trinity and winning two against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.The squad has now lost five out of their last eight matches and will look to bounce back when they celebrate senior day against Principia College on April 8.
Women’s Golf
The women’s golf team finished fourth in the Capitol Hill Classic in Prattville Alabama on March 25 and 26. First-year Amy Beanblossom was the Bears top finisher, finishing third in the tournament, shooting two over par. Defending DIII Player of the Year Sydney Kuo finished in ninth, recording a score of five over par. The Bears will next compete in St. Louis in the WashU Spring Invite on April 7 and 8.
