Fall TV roundup: What’s coming out that you should watch

| Staff Writer

There’s no doubt about it: in recent years, Netflix and other streaming services have significantly shaken up the TV landscape. But when it comes to traditional, over-the-top network providers, the annual pilot circus continues. New shows will abound throughout September and early October—and with class back underway, Washington University students won’t be able to get everything done.

Here’s what I’ll be keeping an eye out for:

‘Kidding’
Premieres: Sept. 9
Channel: Showtime

“Kidding” marks the return of Jim Carrey to the small screen for the first time in around 20 years. On the show, Carrey will star as Jeff Pickles, a children’s television host whose world begins to unravel following the death of his son. The dramedy oscillates between bleak moments and shining anecdotes that paint a more optimistic picture, an unsurprising choice given that the show is directed by Michel Gondry of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

‘You’
Premieres: Sept. 9
Channel: Lifetime

I know, I know: Lifetime series have a reputation. But this one stars “Gossip Girl” alum Penn Badgley as a man who becomes dangerously obsessed with his crush and begins to stalk her online, using her personal information to woo her. In other words: Lonely Boy got a whole lot lonelier. Fans of “Pretty Little Liars” will also be happy to see Shay Mitchell on screen.

‘Maniac’
Premieres: Sept. 21
Channel: Netflix

Although Netflix releases new TV shows throughout the year, “Maniac” comes out smack dab in the middle of pilot season, which is why it’s included on this list. The series focuses on two strangers (portrayed by “Superbad” co-stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill) who find themselves in a pharmaceutical trial for a new drug that can supposedly cure any mental illness. Aside from the all-star cast, the intriguing plot of the fantasy and sci-fi infused series makes it one to watch.

‘Single Parents’
Premieres: Sept. 26
Channel: ABC

Another show, another “Gossip Girl” star. Blair Waldorf—erhm, Leighton Meester—stars as one of a number of single parents who band together to form a support system. The series follows the parents as they navigate their lives and discover how to keep their own identity while also raising their kids. Produced by “New Girl” creator Liz Meriweather, the show is likely to be a hit.

‘All American’
Premieres: Oct. 10
Channel: The CW

Loosely based on the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger, “All American” centers on Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), a student from South Los Angeles who gets recruited to play on the Beverly Hills High School football team. The series is already garnering positive reviews from critics—and if you’re a fan of series like “Friday Night Lights” and “90210,” you’ll want to tune in come October.
