Coming off a 20-18 2023 season, the Bears improved to 28-12 in head coach Casey Cromwell’s second season at WashU. The team clinched a berth in the NCAA regional tournament, which the Bears hosted for the first time in program history, before being eliminated in the regional finals.
The win was one of three that the Bears secured over the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Tartans across their two doubleheaders from April 20-21, leaving the Bears one game behind conference leaders Case Western Reserve University, with one week remaining in the regular season.
“The Case weekend is definitely the series we always have circled on our calendar. They’re definitely our biggest in-conference rivals. We were coming back this year with a big chip on our shoulder, a little bit of vengeance.”
This weekend, however, the Bears left no doubt as to who the better team was. WashU swept the four-game series, securing two victories by mercy rule and outscoring NYU 33-3 across the weekend on April 5-7.
The Washington University softball team went 2-2 in its first four games of University Athletic Association (UAA) play, splitting its weekend series against the Brandeis University Judges on March 29-31.
The Bears’ 2-2 record over the weekend puts them at 11-5 overall entering conference play.
The Washington University Bears softball team won both games of their season-opening doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 25, defeating the Hanover College Panthers by scores of 8-0 and 6-1.
The Bears have become used to comebacks in their tight UAA season, but as the clock wound down, they were unable to pull out a win this time. Carnegie Mellon held on for a 79–73 victory. Two days later, on Feb. 4, the Bears’ struggles were compounded by a 74–59 loss to No. 10 Case Western Reserve University.
