The five characters of Danai Gurira’s “Eclipsed”—four wives married to the same high-ranking officer and peace advocate—find themselves trapped not only by rebel fighting but also by their own beliefs. These women live in a rebel army camp during the last leg of the Liberian Civil War.
Find yourself wanting more from Mumford & Sons? Miss those quirky singles from “Juno”? Are you interested in banjo-tinged folk music? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’re in for a treat. Southeast Engine, an Ohio-based Appalachian folk group, is performing tonight at the Billiken Club.
This Tuesday, Los Angeles-based Flogging Molly will play at the Pageant. The group has been active since 1997, pumping out punk anthems with a traditional Irish edge and proving that two opposite ends of the music spectrum (punk and Celtic) not only get along but also make something amazing.
“Strings” (directed by “Ghost Busters” veteran Ivan Reitman) tells the story of two mid-20-somethings, Emma (Natalie Portman, who won’t be receiving an Oscar nod for this film) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher). While the two are polar opposites, a series of accidental meetings leads to their peculiar friendship. Eventually, Emma and Adam decide to become “sex friends,” a plot point evident from the film’s title.
Matt and Kim, the popular Brooklyn-based indie duo, are coming to Washington University this April to headline this year’s WUStock. The group has been active since 2004, when its adorable members Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino (now husband and wife) met at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute.
When I heard that Relient K was playing a concert at Off Broadway this Thursday, I almost cried for two reasons. One, they’re one of my favorite bands and two, I can’t go. But then I remembered that if lonely people can live vicariously through the romantic lives of others, so too can I live through others’ concert experiences.
Attention all while I make an important announcement. Zach Galifianakis knows more than just how to slip a tiger roofies. Turns out, he might just know a thing or two about acting. Galifianakis stars alongside Kier Gilchrist and Emma Roberts in“It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” a story of a teen who, after a suicide scare, checks himself into the local hospital’s mental ward.
Everything you think you know about all-female rock bands is wrong. Don’t believe me? Go check out Girl in a Coma when they drop by St. Louis for a show at the Firebird September 5, and you may change your tune (pun intended).
“Inception” was met with largely positive reception this summer. However, no film can appeal to all moviegoers—no matter how fantastic 224 of the 258 reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes thought “Inception” was. My parents are two of four people I know that did not enjoy the film. Don’t get me wrong. Differences in opinion should be tolerated, celebrated even.
Stay up to date with everything happening at Washington University and beyond.
