In-Depth
Michigan-Purdue
I like this game because it can really tell us if Michigan has overcome its early season woes. Purdue offers the same spread offense that Appalachian State and Oregon used to punish Michigan’s defense in the first two weeks of the season. While Purdue had a rough weekend against Ohio State, QB Curtis Painter is looking good, averaging 300 passing yards a game with 19 touchdowns and only three interceptions. RB Kory Sheets is averaging 5.6 yards a carry, but has been a little inconsistent. On the other side of the ball, QB Chad Henne has yet to show the improvement that a four-year starter should. The difference maker, and why I favor Michigan, is RB Mike Hart. Hart has yet to have a sub 100 yard game and had a big game last against eastern Michigan. He’s a big leader on the team and will run this more mature Michigan team to another big victory.
Oklahoma-Missouri
Both of these teams are coming off big wins from last week. Oklahoma edged out a Texas team that had struggled to live up to its pre-season hype. Missouri beat a Nebraska team that many thought had finally come unto its own under Bill Callahan. Missouri has played well all season, beating #18 Illinois week 1, and remains one of two undefeated teams in the Big 12. Chase Daniel has been putting up spectacular numbers (1712 yards, 15 td’s for only 4 int’s), but he hasn’t gotten any support from the running game. This why I think Oklahoma edges this one out. Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford had a rough week against Colorado but rebounded nicely against Texas. Other than the Colorado game, he’s looked good all season. In addition, Oklahoma has one of the best corps of running backs in the country to balance their offense. I don’t anticipate Bob Stoops letting another Big 12 conference game fall apart this season. Expect Oklahoma to make a statement.
LSU-Kentucky
One of the great things about college football this season has been parity. The number of upsets seen so far has made it near impossible to predict winners. It’s also made it hard to decide where teams should be ranked. Do these upsets mean previous rankings were misguided or that maybe teams are just very marginal across the board? Other then Cal and LSU, nobody seems to want to fight for the national championship game. Kentucky has played some good games this year, taking down a preseason front-runner Louisville and its NFL prospect QB Brian Brohm and an Arkansas team that boasts Heisman potential running back Darren McFadden. Most of this of course has been due to the great play by Andre Woodson. Unfortunately, LSU looks unstoppable. Last week, LSU beat a Florida team that had been destroying defenses all summer and has already beaten a surprisingly strong South Carolina team that beat Kentucky a few weeks back. Andre Woodson is going to try his best to keep this game close, but his team just won’t be able keep up with the speed of this LSU team.
